It was 1986 when we first sent out a general fundraising letter.

   We needed 1,200 dollars to send Sam to Nicaragua with Arts for a new Nicaragua, to create and perform the show, Death and the General.

   That was not the kind of project that might be supported by the state of Vermont or by the US Government, or any of the big foundations..

    You sent us the money in checks of ten dollars twenty dollars and fifty dollars, and using that money we started a series of cultural exchanges with Nicaragua which took place up till '92.

     We continue to undertake unlikely, unfundable, independent,

Cultural Exchange projects in diverse communities, Slovakia, Finland, France, Quebec, and Mexico. We have produced a cultural exchange project in Mexico almost every year since 1994.

   We continue to focus on ethical questions and difficult cultural situations, recent projects concentrated on ;

·      The myth of Demeter, how she stopped the seed from sprouting in a rage against her brothers Zeus and Hades, which in the light of the wave of hunger sweeping the world seems particularly timely.

·      Executions and Democracy series of images highlighting the injustice and racism of the death penalty.

        We are about to undertake a project in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec with the Zapotec community of San Blas Atempe.

We will consider the folkloric stories of the, Dia de Los Muertos consciousness, that the Zapotecs have preserved since before the conquest.

    We will do this work in one of the most hotly contested areas of Central America, just off the Pan American highway,  where it crosses the transoceanic corridor, a geo-political crossroad that may finally bring this proud ancient culture to an insurmountable crisis.

    Only an independent theatre, only an independent cultural community like Dragon Dance  can do this kind of work.

   The only way we can do it is with your help. We need your financial support. International cultural exchange programs are expensive.
